The Calgary Flames have just come off a successful season, despite looking in the 2nd round against the Edmonton Oilers, who somehow managed to wrangle victory from the jaws of defeat.

When it seemed as if Calgary were to be the victors from Alberta this season, nothing will change behind the bench as Darryl Sutter remains Calgary's bench boss.

This is because the Flames signed Sutter to a two-year extension, which begins in 2023-2024.

Sutter won the Jack Adams award last season and led the Calgary Flames to win the Pacific Division in the NHL, as well.

Sutter, 64, won the Jack Adams Award as the top NHL coach last season when he led Calgary to a 50-21-11 record and a first-place finish in the Pacific Division in his first full season with the team. The Flames lost to the Edmonton Oilers in five games in the Western Conference Second Round.

Officially ending the pre-season with numerous star signings and locking in your winning coach is a big win for Brad Treliving this season.

"I think we're fortunate to have him," Flames general manager Brad Treliving said Saturday. "I think he's one of the best coaches in the game here today. I think he has and continues to have a Hall of Fame career. The structure he puts in place, his ability to drive teams...it was a natural. Darryl and I talked about it this summer, and worked on it, good to get it concluded. Very deserving. ... To me, it was a no-brainer."

Sutter won two Stanley Cups in Los Angeles, in 2012 and 2014, and hadn't coached an NHL game since 2016-2017, returning to coaching in Calgary after they fired Geoff Ward in 2021.

This is Sutter's 2nd run with the organization, as he coach the Flames in 2002-2006 and it looks like the 2nd time is a charm, this time around.
