It is unconfirmed but according to Russ Hubbard, Brad Treliving and Mackenzie Weegar have agreed to terms on a contract extension.

The contract term is reportedly a six-year contract, with an average annual value of $6.75 million per season. This move helps in securing another great defenseman on an already deep team.

Weegar has proven himself to be an elite two-way defenseman in the NHL, with puck-moving skills, Weegar will elevate teammates' play easily, as proven in 2020-2021 when he pushed Gustav Forsling's production to triple.

The seventh-round pick in 2013 has gone from being an afterthought to a 20-plus minute defenseman capable of playing in all-game situations and on either side of the ice. Good lower-body strength helps him maintain puck possession and win board battles. Has developed as a capable puck mover and smart offensive defenseman. Can be partnered up with just about any style of blueliner.

If this turns out to be true, the Flames lost two-star players, to regain high-producing offense and defense, in Weegar and Huberdeau.

Weegar is a player any team should be after, and I'm not sure Bill Zito made the smart move, with this play.

Quickly after he was acquired, on August 5th, it was reported he had to desire to sign long-term in Calgary.
