Moments ago, the Maple Leafs announced the hiring of two assistant coaches, Guy Boucher and Mike Van Ryn.
With the Leafs losing Assistant Coach Spencer Carbery to the Washington Capitals, a move was expected to replace him, but the hiring of two coaches would indicate assistant Dean Chynoweth may be leaving the organization too.
The two coaches hired both have far different connections to the league. Guy Boucher was a prolific head coach in the 2010s, leading both the Tampa Bay Lightning and Ottawa Senators to the third round of the playoffs. Mike Van Ryn on the other hand, has only been assistant coach to last year's St. Louis Blues team, and us of course, a former Maple Leaf player. Only playing 28 games with the Leafs in 2008, Van Run's most memorable moment came when he was hit through the glass by the Bruins' Milan Lucic.
It's interesting to speculate Treliving's process in hiring these coaches, and particularly, if Guy Boucher has a function of head coach insurance - in case the early season goes poorly for Keefe and the Leafs.
