The Dallas Stars have been burdened with what could be a significant injury to starting goalie Jake Oettinger. Oettinger left Saturday's game with a lower body injury. The stars have said Oettinger will be out of the lineup for a minimum of 1 week before he will be reassessed.

Unfortunately for the Stars due to their salary cap situation they are unable to recall Anton Khudobin from the American Hockey League. Because of this the Stars announced today that they'd signed Matt Murray to a one-year contract.

Murray is expected to backup Scott Wedgewood for the foreseeable future. The 24-year-old Murray has only played 11 professional games over the past two years. Over that time though, he has been a stellar.

If the Oettinger's injury is long-term, the team will be forced to play some on long-term injury reserve to clear cap space for a corresponding move. This is just another reason why the NHL's hard salary cap needs to be reevaluated. A team should never be forced to play with an under qualified goaltender due to salary purposes.
