Breaking News - NHL announces they have postponed the World Cup of Hockey
When the NHL and NHLPA announced they would not be attending the Olympics, they announced plans to host the World Cup of Hockey in its place. Original plans for the tournament had it being hoisted in 2024. But today the NHL and NHLPA announced a postponement to the tournament.
Over the last year, the NHL and the NHLPA have been working on plans to conduct the next World Cup of Hockey, the premier international best-on-best hockey tournament, in February 2024. Unfortunately, in the current environment it is not feasible to hold the World Cup of Hockey at that time. We continue to plan for the next World Cup of Hockey, hopefully in February 2025.
This will push back the tournament by at least one year. This will continue to extend the time since the last best on best tournament. The last time the league took part in a best on best tournament was 2016, extending it to almost 10 years between tournaments.
The NHL's failure to create best on best action, has stolen almost a decade away from some of the best players in the game.
