Earlier this offseason, the St. Louis Blues locked up part of their future when they signed Robert Thomas to an eight-year, $65MM contract. The 23-year-old center exploded with 77 points in 2021-22, establishing himself as one of the best young pivots in the league.
Hockey Insider Elliotte Friedman reports that a Jordan Kyrou extension is getting close in St. Louis. Sounding similar to Thomas's extension signed earlier this summer. (8x$8.125M)
Now 24, Kyrou had his own breakout season in 2021-22, reaching 27 goals and 75 points in 74 games. He was a horse in the playoffs as well, adding seven goals in 12 games. Last year at this time, the Blues decided to go with identical two-year bridge deals for Thomas and Kyrou, contracts that carry an average annual value of just $2.8MM.
Blues GM Doug Armstrong is gathering a good young core of forwards who are all signed to multi year contracts in Thomas, Pavel Buchnevich, Brandon Saad, Brayden Schenn, and soon Kyrou will be following. Schenn is the only player over the age of 30.
Kyrou is a key piece for this franchise going forward. Extending both him and Thomas signals that the Blues are potentially shifting toward a smaller, faster, and more skilled offensive play style, similar to what the rest of the NHL has done for the last few seasons.
