Heading into game 4 between the Colorado Avalanche and Seattle Kraken, the hockey world has been stunned by the Kraken's success throughout this season and early on in the playoffs. After tonight, despite earning their first home playoff win, the task might be tougher for the Kraken after losing a critical player to injury after a dirty hit by Cale Makar.
With the Kraken jumping to another early lead to start a game in this series, Cale Makar must have been looking for a spark when he made a dirty hit against Kraken forward Jared McCann. With the puck in the air and no where near the play, Makar hits McCann in a vulnerable and unsuspecting spot, sending him hard into the boards.
The play was initially called a five minute major, but was somehow reduced to a minor penalty after an official initated review. Perhaps the officials don't see the play as dangerous as a typical boarding call, given that Makar initiates contact with McCann's shoulders, but the vulnerability of his position and being completely away from the puck makes this an especially bad hit.
The Kraken will now face a tall task of eliminating the reigning Stanley Cup Champions without McCann, their leading goal scorer, as head coach Dave Hakstol announced he's expected to miss game five and potentially more time this series.
