In the 4th round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, the Vancouver Canucks took a shot on a Massachusetts high school defensemen named Jack Rathbone. What seemed like an unlikely pick at the time has slowly panned out as Rathbone has improved every single season, and has already played a handful of NHL games. Just last week, Jack Rathbone was named AHL Player of the Week and tonight he was having another standout game.
Halfway through the third period, Rathbone was retrieving the puck from his own zone and was hit from behind into the end boards, by Colton Sceviour.
The game was stopped and medical staff from both teams attended to Jack Rathbone while he laid motionless on the ice.
Rathbone was removed from the ice on a stretcher, he remained motionless the entire time. Both Abbotsford and Bakersfield left their benches to salute Rathbone in a great show of sportsmanship.
As mentioned Rathbone remained motionless and did not issue the classic "thumbs up" to the crowd.
We are hoping for a speedy and full recovery for Rathbone.
