The news was under the radar, but last week, Hurricanes star forward Andrei Svechnikov suffered an injury in a the team's 4-0 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights. Initially held out and listed as a game time decision, news broke moments ago that the injury is far more severe.

Elliotte Friedman just broke the news that the Svechnikov will miss the rest of the season with an ACL injury.

It's a devastating blow to both Svechnikov and the team, as he's having a career year on a team that looks to be destined for a long playoff run. Friedman notes that both parties are exploring other opinions in hopes of a faster return to the lineup.

Svechnikov, only 22 years old, has 23 goals and 55 points in 64 games this season, playing a key role on one of the best offences in the league.

What's even more unfortunate, and at this point feels cruel, is that it's the second major ACL injury the team has dealt with this year - the first being Max Pacioretty, who's only played 5 career games in Carolina. The Hurricanes are a deep enough team to withstand the injuries, but it takes a significant blow to the strength of their roster going into the playoffs.
