Controversial offside review costs Minnesota Wild the win
It was a frustrating evening for the Minnesota Wild at the Xcel Energy Center on Tuesday night. The Wild were hosting the Calgary Flames. Minnesota were peppering the puck at Flames' goalie Jacob Markstrom but he was standing on his head forcing the game to overtime.
Wild captain Jared Spurgeon thought he scored the game-winner in overtime, but the play was ruled offside taking the goal back off the board. The game ended with the Wild on the wrong end of a 1-0 shootout loss. The losing result left a sour taste in the Wild players mouths.
Wild forward Marcus Folignio gave his thoughts post game.
"It's tough,» Foligno said, «It's like getting a birthday cake and someone blowing out the candles.»
In the same breath, Foligno made it clear that he disagreed with the call on the ice. He thought Spurgeon had possession of the puck and, thus, should've been able to precede the puck into the offensive zone. He compared it to a play from last month when Vancouver winger Anthony Beauvillier did pretty much the same thing and the officials ruled him onside.
«I don't know what the difference is,» Foligno said, «I think the guy that makes a pass over the blue line is pretty in control of the puck.»
Meanwhile, coach Dean Evason said he actually agreed that it was offside. He noted how Spurgeon released the puck before his body got over the blue line.
«It's so unpredictable, right?» Evason said, «You're not 100 percent.»
With the win the Flames keep their playoff hopes alive. They are now four points back of the final wild card position. Markstrom's performance was a glimpse of his full capabilities. Unfortunately for the Flames their starting goalie hasn't nearly been good enough this season. If Calagry is going to get back into the playoff picture, they will need more performances like this from their 33 year old starter.
