The last few nights there has been multiple shootout attempts that have been controversial. Last Friday, the Washington Capitals beat the Buffalo Sabres but not without some controversy on the winning goal.
Evgeny Kuznetsov came in for his attempt as slow as you legally can. He technically kept forward momentum but he may have stopped for a bit. There was much debate whether it should even be legal.
Then Wednesday, again the Buffalo Sabres were on the losing end of a controversial shootout goal. Blake Wheeler of the Winnipeg Jets came in, snowplowed, and possibly moved laterally or backwards a before scoring. Craig Anderson, the Sabres goalie, was not happy.
While the referees deemed both goals legal there is a prevailing thought that the NHL needs to reevaluate the rules for shootout shots going forward.
