Damon Severson calls out a fan who riped his play online
The New Jersey Devils are on a tear with Lindy Ruff's system turning the club around, from last season. With 19 wins, 4 losses, and 1 overtime loss, the Devils are #1 in the Metropolitan Division and in the NHL above the Boston Bruins.
Fans have been hard on the team, with high expectations after years of losing. Unfortunately defenseman Damon Severson has been collateral damage of this.
The Devils lost 4-3 to the Nashville Predators, Thursday night and fans didn't hold back their thoughts regarding the Alternate Captain.
It clearly irked the veteran defenseman, as you see in his reply to the fan. In his defense, the Devils have played hard and come from behind compared to the last year to be top in the league. I'm sure Severson felt the criticism was unwarranted.
However, in 24 games, the Defenseman has put up 6 points, with a -1 +/- and 2 power-play points. The 3rd pairing defenseman has contributed and is on the 2nd Power-Play unit and 2nd Penalty Kill unit, so I can't see the reason for the criticism.
Severson has always been a great depth piece who had his best season points-wise in 2021-2022 with 46 points. Severson took some time to speak to Ryan Novo about his online presence.
«A burner Twitter account? No I don't. I have a public one and I barely use it,» Severson told NJ Advance Media. «Like I said, the only time I go on is when my buddies send me a screenshot of something and say, go on Twitter and check this out.' Of course, they want to wind me up to get me going.»
«We'll just have a laugh about it because people are so clueless, to put it bluntly. Some people, not everybody. There's a lot of hockey people that get it, but some people just say things just to say things. I don't know if it makes them feel better or what.»
It's nice to see players like Severson not hiding behind a burner, but it's also surprising to see him so rattled by a simple comment that he felt the need to respond.
