17-year-old OHL defensemen undergoes emergency surgery after suffering a gruesome cut
This season we have already seen multiple incidents where players have been cut or injured by skate blades. Most notably, Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane, suffered a bad cut when his wrist was contacted by the skate of Pat Maroon. What seemed uncommon has become an almost weekly occurrence in the hockey world.
Last night in Kingston of the OHL, Frontenacs' defenseman Maleek McGowan suffered an injury similar to Evander Kane's.
4 minutes into the third period of tonight's game, defenceman Maleek McGowan suffered an injury on a scary incidental play. He is in stable condition and alert. He is being taken to the hospital for further evaluation.
Fortunately, after his wrist was cut by a skate blade, the young defenseman is in stable condition after successful surgery. The North Bay Battalion medical staff had a helping hand in making sure Maleek got the medical attention required for such an injury.
Maleek was rushed to the hospital and was forced to undergo emergency surgery. Luckily the Fronts provided the following update.
The Kingston Frontenacs Hockey Club is pleased to announce that Maleek McGowan underwent successful surgery last night. He is in stable condition, safe and on the road to recovery.
We would like to thank our training and medical staff led by Chris Nelson and Dr. Jennifer Hacking, the North Bay Battalion training staff, the onsite paramedics, Leon's Centre staff, and the medical team at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KGH) for their immediate attention while treating and caring for Maleek McGowan.
We wish Maleek all the best in his recovery process.
Fans and teammates have rallied in support of McGowan, and are hopeful for a timely recovery in the meantime. With Evander Kane's injury, the time frame for the Winger was 3 to 4 months and I can't imagine it being any different for the Frontenacs youngster.
