Devils GM discusses one of his most valuable trade chips
The New Jersey Devils currently find themselves in an odd position with talented young players pushing to drive the team on their own, and a few older players from their previously attempted rebuild. The Devils, outside of a playoff position this year, could look to sell off some older players that don't meet their competitive window, and one of those players could be Damon Severson.
Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald spoke to Pierre LeBrun of the Athletic on the possibility of moving on from Severson, and what kind of deal would be most enticing for the Devils.
Damon has a lot of value to us, he's a very good player. Right-shot defencemen don't grow on trees. I don't know what he's going to want [on his next contract]. We have his services for another year at least. I can tell you, moving Damon Severson, it would have to be a really good package that helps us now and in the future.
At 27 years old and signed through the 2023 season at only $4.16M, Severson could be steady addition to any contending team, especially one looking to add that right-handed shot to the defence corps.
Given his age, team-friendly contract, and the inherent value of shooting on the right side, Fitzgerald's ransom of a command for Severson makes sense. The Devils will be in no rush to trade Severson, seeing both the value in keeping him and trading him for a massive package.
