On tonight's edition of 32 Thoughts, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed the Oilers' plans to address the longstanding need on defence.
With players like Jakob Chychrun, Mattias Ekholm, and Eric Gudbranson available and all linked to the Oilers already, Friedman revealed the team may go another route than previously thought. The Oilers will look to internal options before exploring trade, specifically Phillip Broberg.
Broberg is the Oilers top defensive prospect in the organization, drafted 8th overall in 2019. He's only played 37 games in the NHL to this point, but his pedigree and potential will steer the Oilers towards trying him as an option before exploring the trade market.
In addition to a defenceman, the Oilers could stand to make improvements elsewhere on their roster. They'll be looking to add scoring depth for the playoffs, and potentially a third-string goalie, who could take games from Campbell if necessary.
