Karlsson started off the year at a torrid pace and still finds himself leading the scoring race for defenders. Only 52 games into the season Karlsson finds himself sitting just 12 points behind his career high in points. With 17 goals and 53 assists it is clear that Erik Karlsson is back. Unfortunately though Karlsson's rebirth couldn't have come at a worse time, because the Sharks are one of the worst teams in the NHL, wasting one of the most productive seasons by a defenseman in years.
Despite his offensive rejuvenation, sometimes Karlsson's defensive flaws are still on display. Last night that was the case, especially on the 4th goal of the game, which with 1:05 left on the clock, gave the Panthers a commanding 4-1 lead.
It wasn't the mistake on the goal that caught everyone's attention, it was what happened after the goal that left people scratching their heads. After coming off the ice, instead of finding his usual spot on the bench Karlsson heads straight down the tunnel and to the locker room for an early shower.
It's unlikely Karlsson finds a new home before the Trade Deadline, but don't be surprised if he and the Sharks try and find him a brand new home this summer. Especially as the Sharks enter a full rebuild.
