When the Toronto Maple Leafs won the NHL Draft Lottery it marked the end of years of struggling. The Maple Leafs were stuck in a permanent cycle until they bottomed out and struck the jackpot with selecting 1st overall.

From Matthews' first game it was clear that he was going to be a very special player. Matthews has exceeded all expectations and could possibly go down the best Toronto Maple Leafs' player of all time. Unfortunately for Maple Leafs' fans Matthews signed a 5-year contract with the Maple Leafs that walked him directly to unrestricted free agency. With that came fears that Matthews would walk at his earliest possible opportunity.

That's exactly what former NHLer, Ryan Whitney believes will happen.

<1>Don't think for a second he's re-signing in Toronto. UFA in two years? Matthews is gonezo

Matthews appears to be very happy in Toronto, but there is a very good possibility that Whit is right. The next 24 months in Toronto should see some very anxious moments when it comes to Auston Matthews' next contract.
