Mikko Rantanen Breaks Silence and Speaks for the First Time Since Being Traded to the Carolina Hurricanes
In an interview, Mikko Rantanen revealed his reaction a day after the Colorado Avalanche traded him to the Carolina Hurricanes.
On Friday, the Carolina Hurricanes and the Colorado Avalanche surprised the whole National Hockey League when they agreed on the terms of a trade involving the Finnish superstar Mikko Rantanen.
Indeed, after 10 years in the Avalanche's organization, he is now a member of the Hurricanes.
Only a day after being traded, he jumped on the ice to take part in his first game in his new threads.
The Canes were facing the New York Islanders and lost 3-2 in overtime.
After the loss, Rantanen was asked to share his views on what hurt him the most about the trade.
Here's what he said:
"Well, yeah, I think obviously, finding out last night, I didn't get a lot of sleep. There were a lot of emotions because it was 10 years in Colorado, you know, so it was a long time. Maybe that's the hardest part."
"I think it happened too quickly. And today there was a game, so I had to focus and get ready for that. Maybe now, with a couple of days off, I'll have time to process it.
But right now, I just want to focus on the future. It's behind us now. The NHL is a raw business sometimes, you know, and things like this happen. It hasn't really hit me yet, but I think it will."
I was shocked yesterday. I was surprised, for sure. But, you know, I don't really want to get into too many details. It was definitely unexpected.
He also talked about his performance against the Islanders, saying he plans on getting better after being held pointless in his first game as a Canes player. He did, however, have great words for his teammates and Rod Brind'Amour's system:
"But, you know, I felt pretty good. There's obviously room to get better, for sure. But I think there are a lot of good players here, and the system is solid, so it should be good."
