The NHL is still trying to do damage control after the Boston Bruins signed Mitchell Miller to a contract. The league and Gary Bettman are trying to make it clear that they care about the off ice issues of some players. Last week Bettman announced that Miller was ineligible for the NHL, before confirming that Montreal Canadiens' prospect Logan Mailloux was also ineligible.

This news came as a surprise to many, especially after both Miller and Mailloux have had their contracts registered with the league. According to NHL sources, despite the Commissioner's claims, there is currently not a registry of "ineligible players, but that hasn't stopped Bettman from taking his stance.

Now news has leaked that the Canadiens' picking Mailloux still doesn't sit well with Bettman, not because the Canadiens selected him. But because the Canadiens and then General Manager, Marc Bergevin broke the unwritten rule of drafting him in the first round.

According to a source, Bettman was fine with Mailloux being drafted, despite the prospect asking teams not to select him. But Bettman believed their was an understanding that no team would select him in the first round. If true this is just another example of why Bettman should no longer be in charge of the league that he has done little to grow at the rate of every other sport.
