Insider provides update on Auston Matthews' next contract proving he finally understands what it takes to win
There is no doubt that when Auston Matthews signs his next contract that he'll surpass Nathan MacKinnon as the highest paid player in the league. He is expected to do that on a 3-5 year contract, while that unique contract structure isn't unheard of it'll allow him to maximize his value under the salary cap. But for the first time it sounds like Matthews isn't entirely concerned with money.
During an appearance on Sportsnet 590 radio, Frank Seravalli of The Daily Faceoff shared the following positive news for Maple Leafs fans.
Frank Seravalli on SN590 says Auston Matthews wants to allow enough money on the Leafs' cap to build a team that has a chance to win. His next contract is not about setting a record, it's not about getting 4x$15M.
He wants to win and he needs to find a spot that pays him appropriately and gives the Leafs room to go out and make moves.
The clip can be heard at 37:40 of the video.
If Matthews has finally figured out that he needs additional support and if he can set a precedent for his teammates to take less, this could make the Maple Leafs a much deeper team. If Matthews, Nylander and Marner all buy into this the Maple Leafs could be a very dangerous team going forward.
