John Tortorella gives a typical Tortorella type quote after benching two of his best players for an entire period
The Philadelphia Flyers are off to a decent start to the regular season. Currently they sit in second place in the Metropolitan division. However, yesterday they were shutout at home by the lowly San Jose Sharks. Additionally, head coach John Tortorella was not pleased with the teams uninspired performance and benched two of the Philadelphia's top six forwards for an entire period and.
Both Kevin Hayes and Travis Konecny were benched for the entire third period. The media asked for Tortorella for an explanation for his actions and his response was classic Tortorella:
«I'm just going to keep that in the room.»
Six games into the regular season and let the drama begin for Philadelphia Flyers. Clearly Tortorella didn't like certain players effort in the San Jose game, and he is sending a message that his skilled players must be better. Konecny finished the game minus two and Hayes finished minus one.
On the other hand, Hayes and Konecny are known for their scoring ability. Was keeping them out of the entire third period a good idea? Tortorella is known for keeping all his players accountable for their play, so this is not a surprising move coming from him. The question is, how will Travis Konecny and Kevin Hayes respond to their benching?
Only six games into the season, Tortorella is showing he's not afraid to make a statement. Tortorella needs be careful though. He has the reputation for players to tune him out. We'll see how this plays out. There doesn't seem to be a dull moment when it comes to Tortorella's coaching style and his comments so stay tuned for more drama.
