Jonathan Toews interested in taking a discount to play for a Canadian team for next season
As the Chicago Blackhawks struggle to remain competitive and compete for a playoff spot rumors of trading their captain Jonathan Toews have persisted all year. At the end of the day, it is up to Toews to decide if he is traded and where he wants to go since he has a no movement clause in his contract. TSN insider Mike Johnson suggested that Toews might be interested in Winnipeg. The Jets have played very well this season and seem to be revitalized under new head coach Rick Bowness. They currently sit in second place in the division.
What also makes this rumor interesting is that Toews is from Winnipeg. Does he have any interest in playing for his home town team? We will have to wait and see. It does seem likely that at some point the Blackhawks will move Kane and Toews before this year's trade deadline in hope to acquire future assets.
There are probably two roadblocks to moving Toews to Winnipeg. First the Jets have plenty of centers already so Toews or someone else might have to move to the wing. Is that the best fit for their team? The other issue is, how much is Chicago looking for in return for Toews? If the asking price is too high, Winnipeg might want to look elsewhere for players for their likely playoff push.
Whether he's traded to Winnipeg this year, it's pretty clear this summer when Toews becomes a free agent it's not out of the question that he'd return home to Winnipeg.
