Judge renders decision in case that left 19-year-old hockey player with a broken jaw, lost teeth and severe facial injuries
In January of 2022 Kid Andersson was sitting on the players bench during a game for his under 20 team. Andersson was sitting on the bench taking a drink when an opposing player took is stick and struck him directly in the face and both. Those in attendance described the swing as "axe like".
Andersson's injuries were extremely severe. Andersson suffered a broken jaw, lost multiple teeth and ended up with a severe gash which caused him to lose a significant amount of blood. The injuries were so severe Andersson was forced to take part in a liquids only diet for weeks.
The video below shows the attack at the 15 second mark of the clip.
The photos of the incident are very gruesome, viewer discretion is advised.
The attacker involved in the incident has not been named, but he was charged with assault in the matter. Yesterday the court reached a very surprising verdict.
According to legal documents the defendant, only identified as "XX" must pay the victim $6,500 in damages. However, somehow the attacker was acquitted of the assault charges in the case. The judge ruled that the player was not attempting to assault Andersson and instead was simply "trying to knock the bottle out of his hand" after Andersson accidentally sprayed him with water
The evidence presented is therefore not sufficient to establish beyond reasonable doubt that XX acted with intent when Kid Andersson was hit by his hockey stick in the face. The prosecution is therefore not proven and XX should be acquitted.
This is a surprising decision, given how damning the evidence appears to be against the player. The lawyer of the accused shared the following thoughts with Expressen.se.
It is absolutely right that he is acquitted. My client has said from the beginning that he wants to pay for the damages he has caused, but it was an accident and not a deliberate act.
Andersson has since returned to play, but there is no information on how he feels about this judgement.
