KHL brings in Interesting Rule Change that Could Be Beneficial in North America
Regardless of the league, it seems the main focus for hockey over the last few years has been making the game faster, and decreasing downtime while the clock is running. A new rule change for the 2023-24 season in the KHL may be something the NHL looks at in the future.
The KHL's latest change aims to stop defencemen (and other players) from standing behind their own net with the puck for extended periods of time.
"The KHL made an interesting rule change: a player cannot keep the puck behind his net for more than three seconds, otherwise the play is dead, for a face off in the defensive zone. The player at fault will be issued a warning. Subsequent violations will lead to a fine." - Andrew Zadarnowski
Players generally keep the puck behind their own net while their teammates complete a line change and/or get into position. However, sometimes, they are simply waiting for the perfect passing play to open up. Forcing them to make a move faster will likely lead to some mistakes and turnovers that turn into chances and possibly even goals.
As of yet, the NHL has not made any indication that this is something that is perceived as a problem that needs fixing. However, with the intent of speeding up, and opening up the game, it may be something that gets a good, hard look down the road.
