Kyle Dubas not responsible for Mark Giordano's team friendly contract
Yesterday Mark Giordano re-signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs for 2-years, with an annual cap hit of $800,000. The deal was immediately applauded as a victory for the Maple Leafs, which it absolutely is. Many Leafs' fans immediately heralded this as a 'Kyle Dubas Master Class'.
But it turns out that might not be the case.
According to Elliotte Friedman, it wasn't Kyle Dubas who negotiated this cap hit. It was actually Giordano himself who approached Dubas to willingly accept less money.
According to Friedman on today's 32 Thoughts podcast, the Leafs and Giordano had an agreement on a new contract on Saturday at a slightly higher number (~$1M), but Giordano came back and said he would be willing to take even less to free up money for the team to spend elsewhere.
While Mark Giordano signed at $1,000,000 per year, it was Gio himself willing to lower his annual earnings. Giordano has a career earnings north of $61,000,000 so his key motivator was definitely not money. Giordano clearly feels like he can win with the Maple Leafs, as he chases that elusive Stanley Cup.
