Last remaining free agent must sign by 5 pm or sit for the entire season
The clock is ticking for the last remaining unrestricted free agent to sign his contract or he will risk losing the entire season. The NHL's deadline to sign restricted free agents is looming on Thursday at 5 o'clock ET, or else that player is ineligible to play this season, and Alex Formenton is the league's last unsigned free agent.
The 23 year old, could certainly provide some more offence to the Senators bottom six. Formenton scored 18 goals and 32 points In 79 games last season.
TSN hockey insider Darren Dreger had this to say on the Formenton situation last month.
"Well, they're not moving very far and this has been a real quiet stalemate between Formenton and the Ottawa Senators. Two options here: you either sign Alex Formenton and keep him with the Ottawa Senators, or you trade him to get him back in the NHL. Some believe a trade is more likely and I suppose Europe, long-term, could be an option as well."
It appears there hasn't been much progress made since then. There is some speculation around league circles that Formenton may be facing discipline for potential involvement in the Team Canada 2018 World Junior Championship team's sexual assault case.
Formenton is one of the few players from that World Junior team who did not respond to the allegations from media members either directly or through his representative.
It is an interesting situation with Formenton. The Senators brought in some serious talent in the off-season but have been terrible with a disappointing 8-13-1 record. The Sens have $4,741,722 in cap space currently. Formenton's projected contract on a one-year deal would be in the $2M-$2.5M range. Why haven't the Senators attempted to sign him?
