Last night, the Minnesota Wild paid tribute to their best player in franchise history by retiring Mikko Koivu's number 9. With over 1000 games and 709 points all while playing with the Wild, it's fitting his is the first jersey to be retired in franchise history.
Koivu, although famously shy of the spotlight, appeared to make a short yet emotional speech while his number was lifted to the rafters.
Thanking the organization and fans for supporting him throughout his career, while also repaying thanks to the city of Minnesota as his second home, it was certainly an emotional night for Koivu. If he continues playing in Minnesota, last night's game could have featured the Wild's next best franchise player as well, Kirill Kaprizov.
