Minnesota Wild release statement about cancelled Law Enforcement Appreciation Night
The Minnesota Wild drew significant criticism when they announced a Law Enforcement Appreciation Night. Some fans were offended by their choice to show appreciation to local police, while others felt there was nothing wrong. The Wild chose to remove the advertised event from their calendar.
The Wild released the following statement about the advertised event
We understand the black and blue flag symbol means many things to many people. Our only intention was to show support for law enforcement for the outstanding work they do in our local communities. Moving forward we will work hard to show appreciation for various groups in ways that best reflect our shared community values.
To some fans this goes to show that hockey culture is still nowhere close to becoming more understanding or diverse. The Minnesota Wild's home arena is in Saint Paul, Minnesota where George Floyd was murdered, and it is clear the community is still divided from this incident.
While the Wild acknowledge their understanding for the fans positions, it seems clear their intent was not malicious. Hopefully the Wild can continue to help bridge a gap between the local community and police services.
