Last night's draft lottery was perhaps the most consequential of the last 7 years, with the rights to the young phenom Connor Bedard on the line. It's a tense moment for fans of the teams involved, even for hockey fans at large to see the destination of Bedard, and the NHL blew the moment in classic fashion.

Moments before the Blackhawks were revealed as the owner of the first overall pick, a gold star appeared next to their logo on the board, indicating they'd won the lottery before it was performed on-air.

Of course, this event leads fans to once again doubt the integrity of the NHL draft lottery, accusing the event being rigged in favour of bigger markets. However - the lottery is held well before the television production takes place, and the gold star is likely just a premature button-press.

At the end of the day, Connor Bedard will begin his NHL career with the Chicago Blackhawks. Last season, the team aggressively tanked to secure their best possible position in the draft, and despite not finishing last place, were awarded the ultimate prize. It will be an instant kickstart to the Blackhawks once again becoming a Stanley Cup Contender.
