New Jersey Devils looking at a unique way of getting rid of overpaid PK Subban
The NHL deadline is scheduled for March 21st and teams are doing their very best to rid themselves of bad contracts and position themselves favorably for the future. But what if that asset you hold is virtually unmovable? Because due to his cap hit of $9,000,000 that is what has happened to PK Subban. Given his play this year even as a double retained contract $2,500,000 is still a lot for many contenders to palate for a pure rental.
Well according to Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek, the New Jersey Devils are looking at a very unique way of possible handling the PK Subban situation and that is, simply terminating his deal.
Friedman and Marek talk about the idea of the #NJDevils terminating PK Subban's contract. Moving his cap hit will be difficult at the deadline but if both parties agree to terminate the contract he could become a UFA and sign anywhere for the league minimum.
However, this may piss off GMs around the league if Subban goes to a team they might end up facing that they feel might give them an edge by adding Subban for nothing.
This technique has been used for years in the NBA, but would be a first in the NHL. It will be interesting to see how this situation develops.
