Nic Hague's agent opens up on why he's refusing to attend training camp
It appears Nicolas Hague may not have a team to report to, by the time training camp starts. The Vegas Golden Knights and the young defenseman, haven't had discussions about a contract since July. Hague was the 34th overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft by the Vegas Golden Knights.
Given that Vegas is quickly becoming a destination for players to avoid, this will be another nail in the coffin, for the atmosphere Kelly McCrimmon is creating. It's been reported that Hague is in Vegas, but will not show up to camp if there's no contract.
The young defenseman had been moving between Chicago and Vegas until he made the team in 2020-2021, after playing 38 NHL games in 2019-2020.
Back in June, there had been talks about a possibility of a trade, but it appears to never manifest, possibly due to the fact he's been injury prone lately. In the last two seasons, he only played 104 games total.
Still, Hague brings some serious potential to the table. Standing at 6-foot-6 and weighing 230 pounds, he's a huge, feisty defender capable of providing some respectable secondary scoring from the point. He's not a complete defenseman by any means, but his size alone makes him a valuable asset on the back end especially on the penalty kill. And while the Golden Knights need all the cap space they can muster, Hague isn't expected to earn that much of a salary increase
In 142 total NHL games, the defenseman has 10 goals and 32 assists for 42 points, with 10 games of playoff experience.
Hague is right to be concerned with the lack of communication from the Golden Knights front office, this might escalate into another Marc-Andre Fleury or Max Pacioretty situation.
