One of the best soccer goalies of all-time just signed a contract to play semi-pro hockey
It's not very often that you hear about a player successfully transitioning from one sport to another, but that's exactly what former Chelsea goaltender, Petr Cech has done. Over the weekend Cech signed a 1-year contract with the Chelmsford Chieftains of the NIHL South Division 1. The deal was a step up for Cech who had previously been playing in Division 2.
Cech not only signed with Chelmsford and immediately started a game on Saturday, which he won. Chelmsford Head Coach, Mark Saunders had this to say about his goaltender:
Having a netminder of Petr's quality and experience come into our squad is a huge boost for us right now. He brings a winning mentality, a desire to compete every single time he's on the ice, and we look forward to seeing him add to our group this season.
Cech was once considered to be one of the greatest goalkeepers in soccer history. Cech played in 440 career games between 2004 and 2019. Cech was regarded so highly have won the Premier League title 4 times, 5 FA Cups, 1 UEFA Champions League Tittle and a UEFA Europa League Title.
Cech retired from soccer in 2019, at which time he decided to pursue one of his life long passions, which was playing hockey. Last season Cech went 11-1-0 with a 1.73 goals against average and a .930 save percentage. Over that time Cech also logged 4 shootouts.
