Ontario Hockey League suspends coach for remainder of 2023-24 season
The Ontario Hockey League has announced a lengthy suspension for one of their coaches following an investigation into a potential violation of the Code of Conduct.
During a game in mid-October, Greg Walters, the former head coach of the Owen Sound Attack, got into a verbal altercation with another team employee and was fired by the organization in the days following.
In a post on their website, the Ontario Hockey League shared that Walters has been suspended for the remainder of the 2023-24 season and if he wishes to coach in the league for 2024-25, he'll need to submit a letter in writing to the commissioner.
"Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Commissioner David Branch today announced that former Owen Sound Attack Head Coach Greg Walters has been suspended from coaching or participating in any way in the OHL until June 30, 2024. This decision comes as a result of an inappropriate verbal altercation Mr. Walters had with another Attack employee during a game on Saturday, October 14, 2023, in which he violated the OHL Code of Conduct.
Based on the results of a League investigation, it is the position of the League that Mr. Walters failed to maintain an environment where all individuals are treated with respect and are free from bullying, harassment or abuse. Throughout this inappropriate verbal altercation, Mr. Walters also demonstrated a clear lack of commitment to the safety of his players, taking a position that compromises the integrity of the League and our game as a whole.
The OHL takes seriously the conduct of coaches who act in a leadership capacity. Each coach must act in a manner that prioritizes the safety and well-being of their players.
Mr. Walters may seek reinstatement to the OHL for the 2024-25 season by applying in writing to the Commissioner."
The Owen Sound Attack currently sit sixth in the OHL's Western Conference with a record of 15-11-2 through 28 games.
