Insider reveals when the Washington Capitals plan on moving
Late yesterday afternoon news broke that Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonis had brokered a deal that would see the Capitals move from the D.C. area. The deal caught fans by surprise and would see the team move across the Potomac River into North Virgina.
Today the deal was officially revealed and it will see both the Washington Capitals and Wizards move locations.
The Alexandria Economic Development Partnership (AEDP) confirmed the news this morning ahead of a 9 a.m. announcement from Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin and the team's owner, Monumental Sports & Entertainment Chairman and CEO Ted Leonsis.
While the deal is agreed upon it is still subject to legislative approval by the Virginia General Assembly. The hope is that the Entertainment District will break ground in 2025 and open in late 2028.
While there is a lot of promise for this new location there are fears that it could ostracize some of the current fan base. It will be very interesting to see how this move comes together for all parties involved.
