Last night the Washington Capitals visited the Seattle Kraken for the first time since war broke out in Ukraine. Since Russia invaded Ukraine, Russian NHLers have come under fire and some have even received death threats in North America, regardless of whether they support Russian President Vladimir Putin or not.
Alex Ovechkin is a known supporter of current Putin. Fans have wanted Ovechkin to condemn Putin's actions against the Ukraine and so far the star forward has only said that he hopes the war ends in peace.
"I'm Russian, right? It's not something I can control. It's not in my hands. I hope it's going to end soon and there's going to be peace in both countries. I don't control this one."
Some protestors decided to show their support for Ukraine outside of Climate Pledge Arena last night and called out Ovechkin for his support of Putin.
While Ovechkin's past support of Putin was well known, we don't truly know whether or not Ovi still supports the Russian President or if he backs the war on Ukraine at all. For the safety of his family in Russia, Ovechkin has been very selective of what he says to the media.
