At this point in time, Alexander Ovechkin is a living and playing legend. Now 38 years old and with 1347 games played, he's one of the most respected veterans in the league. Add to that his 822 goals and 1485 points, and he's a no-doubt hall of fame player. With 42 goals last season, Ovechkin could pass Gretzky's goal total for most of all time if he keeps pace for two more seasons.
Now beginning a new season, Ovechkin was shocked by his own age in a recent interview with Capitals rookie Ivan Miroshnichenko.
While serving as a translator for the Russian native Miroshnichenko, Ovechkin realized that he was drafted the same year the rookie was born, in 2004. Commenting on the fact, Ovechkin joked, «Jesus, I'm old.»
Miroshnichenko was selected in the first round, 20th overall by the Capitals in the 2022 Entry Draft. As a Russian, he commented it was a dream come true to play with Ovechkin, one of his idols growing up, during this training camp and preseason.
If Ovechkin can continue his career with enough success to pass Gretzky's goal record, he'll have much more of these moments realizing the legacy he's left on the NHL.
