Patrick Kane's agent provides update on when he'll sign a new contract
After undergoing hip surgery on June 1st, it wasn't expected that Patrick Kane would sign a new contract right away when he became an unrestricted free agent on Canada Day.
The former Blackhawks and Rangers forward was given a recovery timeline of four-to-six months, but was seen in the last few weeks in the gym preparing for next season, seemingly well ahead of schedule.
While Kane is ahead of schedule in his recovery, he won't be signing anywhere any time soon according to his agent Pat Brisson.
In an interview with ESPN, Brisson said that there isn't a rush to getting his client a new deal and that Kane won't sign a contract until the 2023-24 season begins.
"There's no rush," Brisson said. "This is one I'm very comfortable with. I'm very calm. You could offer me a one-year deal or a two-year deal right now at $7 million or so. I don't even know if I want to entertain it, because it's not what he needs. We'll see, at the right time, how he feels, where he's at, and then we'll take it from there."
He added, "There's going to be plenty of teams doing good, plenty of teams doing bad. "There are going to be teams using [long-term injured reserve]. We'll pick where we want to go. I don't think too many teams will turn him down."
Kane, 34, has played quite well over the last two seasons, despite dealing with the hip issue, recording 92 and 57 points respectively. The Buffalo native was traded to the New York Rangers by Chicago in February after parts of 16 seasons with the Blackhawks. The Rangers lost in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, with Kane putting up six points in seven games.
Whenever Kane signs a contract, it's likely going to be a one-year deal at the league minimum of $775,000, along with some performance bonuses.
