The Rangers have reportedly been high on Kane's trade list. A trade to the Rangers would reunite Kane with former teammate and good friend Artemi Panarin. So what is holding up a deal between two motivated parties? Well according to Darren Dreger, the asking price is extremely prohibitive for the Rangers currently.
Last season the Florida Panthers acquired Claude Giroux under similar circumstances. The cost to acquire Giroux was Owen Tippett, a 2023 3rd Round Pick and a 2024 Conditional 1st round pick. This price is what many felt would be the starting point for a Patrick Kane trade.
Unfortunately for the Rangers, the Blackhawks are looking for significantly more in return. According to Dreger, the conversation between the two teams begins with one of either Kaapo Kakko or Alexis Lafreniere.
For the Rangers, neither Kakko or Lafreniere have lived up to their draft positions, but neither player has even turned 22-years-old at this time. The question has to be asked, does moving a potential late blooming forward in exchange for a rental forward make sense?
That's the question that General Manager, Chris Drury will have to ask himself before March 3rd. The game of cat and mouse is expected to continue between General Managers as teams look to maximize potential returns.
