It feels like Giroux is just one of those players that has been around forever. Claude Giroux was drafted 22nd overall back in 2006 and he has turned out to be an absolute steal for the Flyers. A draft that saw; Erik Johnson go first, Jordan Staal go second and Jonathan Toews go third, Giroux has outproduced all of them, ranking third in the draft class behind only Nicklas Backstrom and Phil 'the thrill' Kessel with 897 points in only 993 games.
While it doesn't feel like the 2006 draft was all that long ago, it really was. Giroux is now on the wrong side of 30, but definitely still has what it takes to be a elite producer in this league. Giroux is currently tied for team lead with Cam Atkinson in points with 39 in 50 games.
The Flyers have had a season they will wish to forget. After going heavy in free agency and offseason trades, the Flyers were plagued with injury all season which has seen them drop to near the bottom of the Metro.
A team that was hoping to be a contender this year is now forced with the difficult decision to trade their long time captain.
With the trade deadline coming quick, Tuesday night on TSN Insider Trading, Pierre LeBrun revealed the asking price for Claude Giroux:
«What the Flyers have told some teams that have called is if Giroux is ready to move, you're talking about a player that arguably could be the most impactful rental at this year's trade deadline. There's a price attached to that.
If Nick Foligno as a rental went for a first and a fourth a year ago at the deadline, then Giroux is looking at a triple asset package for sure for the Flyers. A first, a young player, and a prospect or certainly at least two assets with higher quality. It's a high price to get in on Giroux.» We have seen players like Blake Coleman and Barcley Goodrow bring back first round picks at deadline deals, so for a player at the calibre of Claude Giroux, does this seem like a fair price?
