They made it work last year. Hill missed the rest of the season with a lower-body injury, so Kahkonen and Reimer shared the workload. But it's not normal for teams to carry three netminders capable of regular NHL duty. For starters, that's one valuable roster spot taken by a third keeper who doesn't dress for games and still counts against the salary cap.
25-year-old Kahkonen is signed for two more years with a $2.75 million dollar AAV, 34-year-old Reimer has another season with a $2.25 million AAV, and 26-year-old Hill has one more year with a $2.175 million AAV.
With three capable NHL goalies at their disposal the Sharks could move one to recoup some assets.
The rumored ask by Sharks GM Mike Grier is a second-round pick for James Reimer.
Reimer had a good first season in San Jose, on a very bad Sharks team. He went 19-17-10 with a GAA of 2.90 and save % of .911.
One team is desperate need of a goalie is the Vegas Golden Knights. Vegas announced this week that Robin Lehner will undergo another hip surgery and is expected to miss the entire 2022-2023 season.
Others teams that could have interest in the veteran netminder are the Philadelphia Flyers, and Chicago Blackhawks.
