Sheldon Keefe gets contradicted by one of his players, showing how lost the Leafs are
The Toronto Maple Leafs currently sit 14th in the Eastern Conference. With a record of 4-4-1 the Maple Leafs only sit ahead of the Ottawa Senators and Columbus Blue Jackets in the standings. That is a far cry from where fans expected the Leafs to be. There were many fans who even predicted the Maple Leafs would win the Atlantic Division.
Now after a disappointing 4-2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings, the Leafs appear to be a rudderless ship. After the game the Leafs and Head Coach Sheldon Keefe were available for media and their comments show just how fragmented the team currently is.
When asked about his team and confidence Keefe had a very positive statement for the media:
We don't lack confidence as a team. We just have to execute.
This seems like a positive sign for the Leafs as they are moving in the right direction with their confidence, but unfortunately it doesn't seem as positive after the comments made by Ilya Samsonov.
We've lost confidence the last 3 games. Hard to say. We don't have more smile.
So which answer is it? Does the team have their confidence or have they lost their smile? Either way it seems like a fragmented locker room where the coach is out of touch with his players or a coach who is being forced to coddle his team to keep his overpaid stars happy.
Either way the Leafs better figure things out quickly before the board starts calling for heads to roll.
