Historically women's sports have been treated in a disproportionate manner and you'd think going into 2023 that would change, but sadly it has not.

It was reported this week that The University of Michigan women's hockey program was raising money to fund their ice time from the university itself as it is not covered in the athletic budget for the 2022-2023 season.

The University of Michigan has a reported athletic budget north of $200 million dollars but that money largely goes to its storied football program as well as the men's basketball and men's hockey program and while it's a modest gain, not a single penny has been offered to the women's hockey program for their operating costs.

David Portnoy, the polarizing founder of Barstool sports offered to put up «the rest of the bill» if the entire amount asked wasn't fundraised and true to his word, he sent a donation with a note «HEY Michigan pay for their ice».

If society is serious about becoming more inclusive and promoting women's sports as a whole, why are situations like this still happening?

Women's hockey is some of the most exciting spectator sport to watch, we just need to give it a chance.
