The longtime forward underwent off-season surgery on his hip and wasn't ready to go on opening night and remains an unrestricted free agent, although, many teams have reportedly expressed interest in signing him.
During his recent 32 Thoughts article on Sportsnet, Elliotte Friedman mentioned that a surprising team tried very aggressively to sign Patrick Kane this summer, that being the Florida Panthers.
Friedman also added that Kane's hometown team, the Buffalo Sabres, are also a team to watch in the coming weeks as the three-time Stanley Cup champion decides who he'll play for during the 2023-24 season.
Both the Florida Panthers and Buffalo Sabres would be interesting landing spots for Patrick Kane. There's no doubt that Kane wants to add a fourth Stanley Cup title to his Hall of Fame resume, with both the Panthers and Sabres having aspirations of making the playoffs in the tough Atlantic Division. The Panthers are coming off their second-ever appearance in the Stanley Cup Final, while the Buffalo Sabres are trying to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2011.
Kane, 34, was traded to the New York Rangers by the Blackhawks leading up to the deadline last season, leaving behind the only team he's every known at the NHL level. In 73 games between the Blackhawks and Rangers, Kane had 57 points (21 goals, 36 assists), 16 penalty minutes and was a minus-22. He also added six points in seven playoff games.
