The Pittsburgh Penguins reportedly decided to sign Kasperi Kapanen for a hilariously awful reason
Over the summer the Pittsburgh Penguins had a difficult decision to make about Kasperi Kapanen. The polarizing forward is extremely talented, but he doesn't always compete at the level you'd hope. After being acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs, Kapanen never scored more than 11 goals or 32 points with the Penguins.
The Penguins hoped Kapanen would take a step forward, but it never happened. So this summer the team had to decide between signing Kapanen or letting him become an unrestricted free agent. The Penguins ultimately decided to sign Kapanen to a 2-year deal worth $3,200,000 per season.
Now information has surfaced that the key deciding factor to signing Kapanen appears to be that he'd round a new girlfriend. The crew of Tip of the Ice-Burgh Podcast shared the following information:
For a player like Kapanen who had a history of off ice distractions, this seems like an odd choice for the Penguins. Especially decided to sign him to a multi-year contract. This season Kapanen has found himself as a healthy scratch on multiple occasions and has struggled only scoring 1 goal.
Maybe, just maybe, basing your decision on a player's personal relationship wasn't the best decision.
