Vancouver Canucks and Bo Horvat could be heading towards a seperation if things don't change
The Vancouver Canucks have some work to do to get their captain, Bo Horvat signed. Bo is currently in the last year of his contract that will pay him $5.5 million dollars. Clearly Horvat will want a raise and is seeking a long-term deal. After all, Bo has been a solid piece for the Canucks, and he's spent his entire NHL career in Vancouver.
The problem for Vancouver is their cap space. According to CapFriendly, Vancouver is already over the salary cap going into this season. Vancouver is going to have to get creative with its roster if they're think about re-signing Horvat to a big long-term deal.
Rumor has it that early negotiations are not off to a good start now as training camp opens. Vancouver recently made the news by locking up JT Miller to a seven year 56-million-dollar deal. Many thought JT Miller might be the one who leaves Vancouver but maybe instead it might be Horvat. Either way Vancouver has some work to do to address their captain's situation and it will be interesting to see what the Canucks move is here.
If Horvat isn't extended by the trade deadline it is very likely that the Canucks will be forced into exploring the trade market for Horvat. The Canucks appear to be too committed to their current cap to rebuild, but not good enough to be considered a true contender.
This is a situation that will have to be monitored right up until a resolution is reached.
