After NHL's opening night, a player is already facing supplementary discipline for an illegal check to the head. On their first night home as defending Stanley a cup Champions, Vegas forward Brett Howden delivered a brutal check to the head of Seattle's Brandon Tanev, and will have a hearing with the Department of Player Safety later today.

On the play, Howden crossed through the neutral zone to deliver the check to Tanev, with the focal point of contact being against the head. Tanev's helmet clearly snaps back, and he falls awkwardly on his leg down to the ice. To make matters worse for Howden, Tanev was not playing the puck at the time either, also making this reckless interference.

Howden was assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct after an official's review on the ice.

Hopefully, Brandon Tanev is able to recover quickly from any injury sustained on the play, as he's an important player for the identity of the Kraken. For Howden and the NHL at large, hopefully they learn the consequences of dirty checks like this, and take more caution in the future.
