Washington Capitals set to be moved out of D.C.
With all the talk about relocation in the NHL of the Arizona Coyotes, it will actually be the Washington Capitals that will be moving. However, unlike the rumoured move of the Coyotes, the Capitals won't be rebranding and instead will simply be looking to move to a brand new arena.
According to multiple sources the news will be announced tomorrow that the team is moving across the river to North Virgina.
There is reason to believe a deal to bring the Washington Wizards and Capitals across the Potomac River is imminent even as D.C. continues to negotiate an agreement to keep them downtown.
The details of the new arena include the following:
This event is less than two days after Virginia state lawmakers approved a proposal including a new stadium to lure the Wizards and Capitals - which Leonsis owns - to Alexandria.
This proposal - which includes a new stadium, a 3,000-seat music and entertainment venue, apartments, hotels, and Monumental Sports & Entertainment HQ - still needs to be approved by the Virginia General Assembly and Alexandria City Council.
But according to my source, an event with Leonsis and Youngkin comes after a long process of ironing out details in the proposal lawmakers approved, and seems to signal the Capitals and Wizards moving to Alexandria is looking more like a reality.
It will be interesting to see if there are any final attempts to keep the Capitals in D.C.
There are also no information on how the NHL feels about this potential move, but it is unlikely the league does anything to prevent it.
