For quite some time, the Toronto Maple Leafs and one of their key forwards have been in contract negotiations. A finished deal will hopefully be hammered out soon, as the Maple Leafs continue to vie for playoff spots.
The team and William Nylander are reportedly closer to a deal, according to NHL Insider.
In 39 games, Nylander has 19 goals, and 31 assists for 50 points, making this one of the best seasons of his NHL career.
The Toronto faithful have been wowed by Nylander, who is on pace for 45 goals and 117 points in 2023-2024. Yesterday it was reported by Nick Kypreos that the two parties were close on a deal that would pay Nylander 11.25 million per season, but that might not be all he's asking for.
Dreger believes Nylander will ask for upwards of $11.25 million to $11.5 million per year AAV, for a possible 8-year deal. But his performance has put the Maple Leafs in a bind.
Will Nylander's next contract continue to hamper the team's ability to secure key pieces in the lineup, as far as defense and offensive depth go?
The team has always had a lot of money invested in the core forward group and has yet to secure a Stanley Cup.
