It might not be the greatest of seasons for the Great 8, but Alexander Ovechkin is still managing to set NHL records in the process. He has a brand new one after today's game against the Boston Bruins.
With the Caps up 2-0 near the end of the final period, the Bruins pulled their goalie in the hopes of a late comeback. Instead, Ovechkin grabbed the puck near centre ice, skillfully bounced it off the boards past Hampus Lindholm, and skated around him to score the empty net goal to ice the game. It was the 57th empty net goal of Ovechkin's career, and that now puts him one ahead of Wayne Gretzky for the most ever.
As mentioned in the video, it was Ovechkin's fourth goal in four games after a slow start to the season. That has everyone once again talking about his opportunity to beat another of Gretzky's records: most NHL goals of all time.
"Alex Ovechkin has scored goal No. 834! 🚨
61 goals to pass Wayne Gretzky for most all-time."
At 38 years of age, another 61 goals certainly seems doable for Ovechkin, who will go down in history as one of the greatest goals scorer ever, either way. Ovechkin scored 42 last season, and 50 the one before that. Despite the way things were going at the beginning of this season, if he can get back to scoring even close to that pace, it won't take long for Gretzky's record to fall.
