The New York Rangers took on the Philadelphia Flyers in rookie tournament action and Ranger forward Brett Berard gets kicked out of the game on a soft call.

We've seen a lot of action today in the rookie games so far today, but this has to take the cake for one of the softest calls, dare I say of the season when it's barely started.

At 5:05 of the second period period during a scuffle near the Flyers net, Rangers forward Brett Berard gets a 5 minute major and a game misconduct for spearing on a call that is questionable at best.

Berard does make contact with the opposing player using his stick, but I don't think it should've been called a spear. At worst, Berard poked him, there doesn't appear to be any intent.

I can understand the need for this to be a major given intent, but, given the fact that there was another, more egregious slash in the game, this call doesn't make a ton of sense.

On the ensuing penalty kill, Adam Edstrom would go on to score the tying goal short handed.

The good thing for the Rangers is that they were able to make the best out of a bad call, if this is the precedent though, the NHL season is going to be long.
